Keep Your Golf Practice Going, Whatever the Weather

Keep Your Golf Practice Going, Whatever the Weather

In Metro Vancouver, golf plans often depend on more than enthusiasm. Wet autumn and winter conditions, shorter days and changeable spring weather can make outdoor practice harder to arrange. Summer offers longer evenings, but an indoor session can still fit a busy week. The useful role of indoor golf is not to replace the course: it is to keep practice available when outdoor plans become less convenient.

A reliable setting, not a promise of perfect shots

A sheltered hitting area removes rain and wind from the immediate practice environment. That makes it easier to work on a repeatable task without also managing wet grips or changing layers. It does not guarantee improvement, and a good session still needs a clear purpose. Choose something you can observe, such as starting the ball toward a selected target, rather than simply trying to hit every shot farther.

Let the conditions change your plans, not your goal

During wetter months, indoor practice can provide an alternative when an outdoor session is impractical. In spring, it can help maintain continuity between rounds interrupted by unsettled weather. During summer, it remains an option when the timing suits you better than travelling to an outdoor practice area. Keep the same small goal across these settings so each session connects to the next rather than becoming a fresh experiment.

Make a short visit worth the effort

You do not need to work through the whole bag. Bring or select the clubs relevant to your goal, and check equipment requirements before visiting an unfamiliar facility. For a straightforward accuracy session:

  • Begin with comfortable, shorter swings before moving to your normal swing.
  • Use a mid-iron and choose one clear target.
  • Hit a small group of shots, stepping away and resetting your aim between attempts.
  • Note whether misses tend to finish left, right, short or long.
  • Finish with a few shots to different targets, keeping the same preparation routine.

Leave with one brief note about what to repeat next time. A simple record is more useful than trying to remember every swing.

Know what the indoor setting leaves out

Mats and simulated conditions do not reproduce every challenge of outdoor golf. A mat can make some heavy strikes feel more acceptable than they would from turf. Level footing also offers little preparation for slopes, while a simulated breeze is not the same as feeling wind during a shot. Treat indoor results as feedback from that setting, not proof that a particular score or distance will transfer unchanged to the course.

Keep an outdoor connection

When conditions allow, test the same skill on a grass practice area or during a round. Notice the lie, ground firmness and actual wind before choosing a club. If you practised starting the ball toward a target indoors, use that same intention outside while allowing for the conditions. Short-game and putting practice on real surfaces also adds experience that a hitting bay cannot fully supply.

For Metro Vancouver golfers, the strongest reason to practise indoors throughout the year is flexibility. Use it to preserve a manageable habit, then use outdoor golf to broaden and test what you have practised. The two settings work best as complements, not competitors.
